The New & Better Way
This powerful message from Luke 5 confronts us with a startling truth: Jesus didn't come for those who think they have it all together. When we examine the story of Levi the tax collector, we discover that Jesus intentionally seeks out those society has rejected—the outcasts, the sinners, the broken. The Pharisees were scandalized that Jesus would share a meal with tax collectors, but Jesus responds with clarity: physicians go to the sick, not the healthy. He came to call sinners to repentance, not those who believe themselves righteous. This challenges our Western mindset where success, achievement, and moral goodness can become idols. We're invited to adopt the posture of the Apostle Paul, who called himself the 'chief of sinners' despite writing half the New Testament. Imagine how our relationships would transform if we truly saw ourselves this way—extending grace freely because we've received it abundantly. The miracle is that Jesus welcomes us as insiders while we're still outsiders, offering grace before demanding change. The question we must wrestle with is whether we see Jesus as merely a helpful guide to adjust our lives by a degree, or as the Savior who demands the throne of our hearts entirely.
