Feature vs Benefit

This powerful exploration of Luke chapter 10 challenges us to examine whether we are benefit-seeking Christians or feature Christians who make Jesus the centerpiece of our lives. Through the beloved parable of the Good Samaritan and the story of Mary and Martha, we discover a profound truth: we naturally desire less than God, yet God desires all of us. The lawyer who approached Jesus asked a benefit question—how do I inherit eternal life?—seeking the minimum requirement for maximum gain. But Jesus redirects us toward something far greater: loving God with our entire being and loving our neighbors as ourselves. The Good Samaritan demonstrates costly, inconvenient love that flows from genuine devotion, not from calculating the bare minimum. Meanwhile, Martha's anxious busyness contrasts sharply with Mary's choice of the good portion—sitting at Jesus' feet. We live in a culture constantly selling us benefits, training us to ask what's the least we can give to get what we want. But authentic faith inverts this equation entirely. When we make Jesus the feature of our lives rather than seeking His benefits, we discover that worship transforms everything—our work becomes worship, our service becomes worship, our relationships become worship. The question becomes not what we get out of church or faith, but what we get to give in response to the One who gave everything for us.
