Count the Cost to Win the Prize

What does it truly mean to follow Jesus? Not just admire Him from a distance, not just attend a service or wear a cross as jewelry, but actually follow Him with our whole lives? In Luke 14, Jesus turns to the large crowds walking alongside Him toward Jerusalem and issues one of the most challenging invitations in all of Scripture. He makes clear that discipleship is not a casual add-on to an already full life. It is a reordering of everything. Our families, our careers, our finances, our comfort, our reputation, our very sense of self all come under the authority of Christ. The language Jesus uses is sharp and intentional. He speaks of hating father and mother, of bearing a cross, of renouncing all possessions. He is not calling us to emotional detachment from the people we love. He is calling us to a radical prioritization, one where nothing and no one outranks Him. This message cuts through the noise of a culture that tells us to follow our hearts and put ourselves first. Jesus says something entirely different. He says follow Me, even when it costs you something, even when it is inconvenient, even when the world pushes back. And here is the paradox that makes this invitation so compelling: in surrendering our lives, we actually find them. The life God has designed for us is discovered not by grasping for control, but by placing everything into His hands.
