Back to the Basics

What does it look like to return to the essentials of faith? In this message drawn from Luke 13, we are walked through four foundational basics that have a way of quietly slipping out of our daily lives the longer we walk as believers. The passage opens with a crowd traveling alongside Jesus, and a pointed question about suffering and sin that still echoes in our own assumptions today. From there, we are reminded that repentance is not a one-time event at the start of our faith journey but a daily practice of honest reckoning before God. We are also confronted with the reality that we are each expected to bear fruit, not as a burden but as the natural overflow of what God has already placed within us. The healing of the bent-over woman in the synagogue becomes a striking picture of what happens when we simply respond to what God is asking of us, even when we feel unqualified or overlooked. And the parables of the mustard seed and leaven remind us that the kingdom of God is alive, expanding, and at work in ways we often underestimate. Together these themes paint a picture of a faith that is active, grounded, and deeply personal.
