Looks So Good, but Rotting Inside

What does the inside of your cup look like? That is the penetrating question at the heart of this powerful message drawn from Luke 11:37-54. Jesus sits down to dinner with a group of deeply religious people -- people who knew Scripture, attended worship, gave generously, and prayed faithfully. By every outward measure, they had it together. And yet Jesus looked past all of that and saw something alarming: hearts full of greed, pride, and hidden corruption. Through six serious warnings, he lovingly but directly confronts the danger of polishing the outside while the inside decays. This is not a message about people from the ancient world. It is a mirror held up to each of us. We are remarkably skilled at managing appearances -- looking patient while we are furious, appearing humble while secretly proud, singing about surrender while quietly holding back the parts of ourselves we do not want to give up. The invitation here is not to perform better but to go deeper -- to let the light of truth into the hidden places of our hearts and allow genuine transformation to begin from the inside out.
