The Best of Riches

What does it truly mean to be rich? Luke 12 challenges us to reconsider everything we think we know about wealth, security, and freedom. At the heart of this passage is a parable about a prosperous man who tears down his barns to build bigger ones, convinced that accumulating more will finally bring him peace. But God calls him a fool, not because he was successful, but because he was rich toward himself and poor toward God. This sermon unpacks what it looks like to flip that equation, to grow rich in God rather than in possessions. We explore five ways that growing in God's riches transforms us from the inside out: we become more consistent, less hypocritical, and more whole. We develop a reverent fear of God that paradoxically frees us from fearing anything else. We grow in confidence, trusting that the Holy Spirit will speak through us even in the most uncomfortable moments. We gain a new perspective on possessions, recognizing that our lives do not consist in the abundance of what we own. And we find a deep, settled security that loosens anxiety's grip on our hearts. The invitation is not to a life of striving for more, but to a life of seeking the kingdom first and discovering that everything else finds its proper place.
